Works on Paper

March 8 - April 28, 2007

The Flomenhaft Gallery is proud to show works on paper by great artists of many cultures, ethnic origins and countries.  From the European CoBrA group, post World War II Abstract Expressionists, we have the art of Pierre Alechinsky, Eugene Brands, Asger Jorn and Carl Henning-Pedersen. CoBrA artists were inspired by their historic past and their mythologies, the art of children and the insane.

Other European works are by Jean Dubuffet, who was also inspired by the art of the outsiders, the Russian artists David Burliuk and Erik Bulatov, and Russian émigré collaborative and philosophic photographers, Rimma and Valeriy Gerlovin

Add to this the African-American artists Emma Amos, Romare Bearden and Carrie Mae Weems, a Native-American, Jaune Quick-to-see Smith, a pioneer feminist, Miriam Schapiro, a Japanese- American who has never forgotten being in an internment camp as a child, Roger Shimomura, and the only artist to rebuke Borat in his movie of that name, Linda Stein

This is a rich mix and despite very different origins the art dialogues with each other in a most intriguing way.
