Art Talk with Roger Shimomura
By Rebecca Sutton

"Roger Shimomura is in many ways a study in contrasts. His paintings are visually bright and frequently humorous, even as they expose the dark underbelly of stereotypes and racism. They are unquestionably American, even as they warp idealized visions of American life. And their flat colors, borrowed from pop art and comic books, belie their thematic complexity and depth.

In many ways, these contradictions are manifestations of a recurrent theme throughout Shimomura's life: having to defend that he is American, even when others insist that he is not. Born in Seattle to American-born parents, Shimomura was interned as a child with his family at Camp Minidoka in Idaho following the enactment of Executive Order 9066-legislation signed by Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1942 that legalized the incarceration of Japanese Americans. Shimomura has returned time and again to this period through his painting and performance art, drawing from his own recollections, his grandmother's diaries, family photographs, and research. His explorations of the subject can be found at a number of exhibitions that mark the 75th anniversary of the order's passage, including Year of Remembrance at Seattle's Wing Luke Museum, which is participating in this summer's Blue Star Museums program, and Righting a Wrong: Japanese Americans and WWII at the Smithsonian's National Museum of American History.

Shimomura has continued his probe of race in America beyond the internment, finding regrettably fertile ground within his personal social interactions and the daily news. This body of work has earned him four NEA Fellowships in painting and performance art, and a spot within the collection of over 90 museums. Shimomura, who also taught at the University of Kansas in Lawrence for 35 years, recently spoke with us by phone about the development of his aesthetic, his fascination with stereotypes, and the continued struggle for artists of color."

Flomenhaft Gallery is proud to share Mira Lehr's latest exhibit "Second Nature" now on view at the Adam R. Rose & Peter R. McQuillan Arts Center at Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden!
Picture
Picture
"Mira Lehr’s work is a meditation on the natural world—more on what things do, than how they look.

Her connection with South Florida’s unique landscape and its complex relationship to both human and natural forces has been a constant influence on her work. Lehr brings the fragile qualities of nature to the fore through her use of materials. Gunpowder-burned trails as roots and blooming organic forms are juxtaposed in her visual narratives.

The creation of art within Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden offers a synergy where nature and art are intertwined. It captures the imagination of the human spirit, and ideally, we see our existence linked with nature. Lehr hopes to take the viewer into an exploratory journey capturing the spirit of the vulnerable enigma that lives amongst us.

Second Nature is influenced by the concepts of creation and destruction, the hard edge versus the soft focus, the yin and the yang, as well as the harmonious and the enigmatic."

We are excited to share with you a wonderful article written about the Flomenhaft Gallery exhibition "Holocaust Heroes" by artist Linda Stein that was published in 27East!

Picture
"Linda Stein's Manhattan Exhibition 'Holocaust Heroes' Highlights Bravery and Empowerment"
by Anisah Abdullah

"In addition to the Heroic Tapestries, this exhibition consists of 20 “Spoon to Shell” sculptures meant to highlight sexual abuse, and one “Protector” sculpture with a Wonder Woman shadow to symbolize a brave defender. It also includes an educational program and interactive events such as lectures and performances.

Ms. Stein’s current art represents human empowerment and focuses on a person’s ability to overcome bullying and oppression. During the educational portion of the exhibition, she discusses with the younger audience what it means to be a hero."

Photographer Builder Levy, whose work was featured in the Flomenhaft Gallery photography show "East Meets West"  March 3 - April 16, 2016, was written about in the Charleston Gazette-Mail!

Picture
Builder Levy, "Coal Camp"
"Builder Levy Talks 40 Years Photographing Appalachian Coalfields"
  by Anna Patrick

"Using several cameras, including a cumbersome 5x7 Deardorff view camera, he’d engage with miners sitting outside waiting on their shift to begin as he set up his old-time-looking camera to take a photo of them. He entered underground mines, took portraits of miners’ widows, and was welcomed into family homes and onto their porches.

He got to know the region, befriended miners, union members and activists. He grew close to the region’s heritage and became knowledgeable of its history. Today, he sounds like a labor historian as he recalls where a miner’s strike occurred, what happened there and the event’s resulting legacy. When it comes to coal, he knows the history better than most kids growing up in the Mountain State today."

April 1, 2016

"Neil Folberg and Builder Levy are very different photographers, and not just because all of Mr. Levy's pictures are in black-and-white and much of Mr.Folberg's work is in color...
The exhibition includes Mr. Levy's individuated portraits from Mongolia, India, Bolivia, and Tanzania, as well as from the coal mines of Kentucky and from Harlem and Brooklyn streets. Mr. Folberg's color landscapes are complemented by five black-and-white prints from "Celestial Nights," his technically accomplished images of starry skies over ancient sites."

Mira Lehr was also awarded the Vizcaya Museum commission for her "Lost Spaces" installation (2016). The work will consist of marine ropes, resins, and steel. The piece aims to reflect our continuing efforts to preserve the precious mangroves along our coastline. It will strategically be placed alongside the water. The Baroque Opera performance will punctuate the installation in celebration of Vizcaya's centennial commemoration.
